The Fascinating History of Pimpama Queensland

Pimpama Junction

Pimpama was first settled by European farmers in the early 1800s. The fertile soil and mild climate of the region made it ideal for agriculture, and Pimpama quickly became known as a major producer of vegetables and fruit.

In the 1850s, William Duckett White of Beau Desert Station leased 20,000 acres (81 km2) between the Logan and Comera Rivers, including upper Hotham Creek (a tributary of the Pimpama River), as Pimpama run. In the early 1860s, a tiny hamlet was established on Pimpama River, but it was abandoned shortly after in favor of Hotham Creek. From April 1869, almost all of Pimpama run was offered for selection, and White forfeited his remaining leasehold on Pimpama starting January 1st 1870. The division and sale of town and farm lots at the junction of the Pimpama River and Hotham Creek, which combined Pimpama Township and started a little farming community mostly of Irish people, occurred in February 1870.

In 1874, the town was officially declared a municipality, and its population continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Pimpama is home to over 16,000 people and is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Queensland.

Pimpama was the first settlement in southeast Queensland to have a sawmill. In 1872, Pimpama State School began operations.

After World War II, a settlement grew up. The suburb was planned to be one of the more progressive areas south of Brisbane in the 1960s after being bypassed by a new highway.

Despite its relatively recent history, Pimpama has always been a vibrant and welcoming community. The town is known for its strong sense of community spirit, and there are numerous clubs and organisations that residents can get involved in. Pimpama is also home to a number of unique local businesses, including a popular honey farm and a family-run winery.

Pimpama State Secondary College opened 1 January 2013.

A Woolworths supermarket opened on 5 July 2014.

Pimpama State Primary College opened 1 January 2015.

In the 2016 census, Pimpama had a population of 9,396 people.

King’s Christian College opened its second campus in Pimpama in 2015; their first campus opened at Reedy Creek in 1980 and their third campus opened in Chambers Flat in 2020.

Despite the fact that public transportation has yet to keep up with the city’s expansion, there are two train stations on either side of it: one in Coomera and another in Ormeau. Pimpama is home to several construction projects, including Sunland’s The Heights Residences and Mirvac’s Gainsborough Greens.

The origin of the name is mysterious: it is said to be of Aboriginal origin, and its meaning varies according to reporting. One of the common beliefs is that the name Pimpama is reportedly derived from Bundjalung language (Yugumbir dialect), pim pim ba or bim bim ba, meaning place of soldier (mickey) birds.
